The Apple Vision Pro – when it was first announced, I thought Apple had lost their collective minds. This headset seemed destined to be a massive flop. But then I tried it. As a diehard Android and PC user, the Vision Pro blew me away. I used it for about two hours, enough to get a sense of its hardware, build quality, and durability.

Straight out of the box, the Vision Pro feels premium. It comes with a protective sock for the supposedly glass lens on the front and a magnetically detachable light shield. The solo-knit headband strap, made from 70% recycled yarn, is surprisingly soft and comfortable, reminiscent of the craftsmanship of a thousand grandmas knitting in unison. The band is detachable and has a sturdy snowboard binding-style tightener, fitting the snowboarding goggles vibe.

Cameras are positioned all around the device, and large fan vents cool the internal hardware. The proprietary twist lock power cable is practical, ensuring it can handle the user's movement. But let's talk about the scratch test. Priced at a whopping $3,500, the Vision Pro initially feels solid. I expected the front surface to be made of glass, but as I worked up the Mohs scale of hardness, scratches appeared at level 3, iphone downloads with deeper grooves at level 4. This supposedly laminated glass is, in reality, plastic.

Apple's website describes it as laminated glass, which led me to believe the laminate was beneath the surface, like a car windshield. However, the laminate is on top, prone to permanent scuffs from keys, coins, or any metal object. This front plastic cover can’t be easily replaced, and even with AppleCare, a cover glass replacement costs an additional $300, making the total $800 – not a great deal. While laminated plastic is less likely to shatter, it scratches more easily. Scratches over cameras or sensors can severely impact the device's functionality and your experience.

The Vision Pro’s aluminum body is milled from a single piece, a testament to Apple’s engineering prowess. However, the front cameras are covered with plastic, prone to scratches, which is concerning. On the interior, plastic lenses should only be cleaned with soft cloths to avoid permanent damage. The rubbery ear speakers, metal housing, and fluffy interior cloth are well-designed but fragile.

Attempting a teardown reveals the Vision Pro is not designed for easy repair. Screws are hidden and diverse, with multiple types in use. The dual turbo fans, similar to those in a MacBook, are impressive, and the motorized lenses offer a remarkable viewing experience. However, repairability is an afterthought. Inside, the Vision Pro houses two screens with 23 million micro OLED pixels, providing an immersive experience. The internal hardware includes the M2 and R1 chips, the latter processing inputs from various sensors and delivering a nearly lag-free view.

The Vision Pro is a first-generation product with great potential. Apple has ventured into new territory, and the Vision Pro represents an exciting innovation. However, accessibility could be improved. For instance, incorporating options for wrist twists or double blinks for users with physical impairments would enhance usability.

The device is powered by an external battery pack with a 35.9-watt hour capacity, lasting about two hours. However, the proprietary plug prevents expanding battery life. Enter Anker, my channel sponsor, whose Anker MagGo 10,000 mAh power bank can nearly double the Vision Pro's runtime. Anker’s MagGo chargers are fully compatible with Apple’s MagSafe and charge quickly, ensuring your virtual reality experience doesn’t end prematurely.

The Apple Vision Pro is an impressive step forward, blending cutting-edge technology with premium design. Yet, its fragile plastic components and challenging repairability raise concerns. Handle it with care, keep that protective sock on, and stay tuned for future advancements.
